On 20–21 August 2026, UBFC hosted the EXPAND-EV workshop “Characterization of Extracellular Vesicles Using Biochemical and Instrumental Methods.”
The two-day workshop combined theoretical sessions with practical laboratory training, introducing participants to complementary biochemical and instrumental approaches for the isolation and characterization of extracellular vesicles (EVs).
During the practical sessions, participants performed EV isolation followed by the quantification of proteins and lipids in the isolated samples. They were also trained in preparing EV samples for flow cytometry, including sample preparation, blocking, antibody incubation, data acquisition, and interpretation of results. The analysis included the detection of the classical EV markers CD9, CD63, and CD81.
Participants were also introduced to ATR-FTIR spectroscopy as a complementary approach for EV characterization. The training covered the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of spectra and demonstrated how the technique can provide information on phospholipid membranes and vesicular structures.
Through the combination of theory and hands-on laboratory work, the workshop strengthened participants’ practical knowledge of EV isolation, biochemical analysis, and instrumental characterization, while demonstrating how complementary analytical approaches can be combined to assess EV identity and composition.
The workshop contributed to the EXPAND-EV project's training and knowledge-exchange activities, supporting the sharing of expertise and methodologies across the consortium.
